Remote Work

Hating On Remote Work Is So Hot Right Now

Hating On Remote Work Is So Hot Right Now

Stefan Palios of Remotely Inclined gives his take on two articles that have been widely shared over the last week.

  • Remote Work Is Killing the Hidden Trillion-Dollar Office Economy
  • Working from ‘anywhere’ is possible—but not sustainable

“Rents falling in major cities could result in a huge spike in small-time entrepreneurship: the cute cafes, shops, and restaurants that could never afford city rents. “

“Sure, cities might bring the diversity to you, but distributed and remote teams are possibly the best cross-section of global diversity available to the working world.”

Smart Entrepreneurs will find opportunities in both sides of each of the arguments.

60% of restaurants may permanently close, but that also makes it much less expensive to start a new restaurant now.

If companies become less innovative when they move away from creative hub cities, there will be advantages for the firms that go back to centers like Silicon Valley or New York faster.

    These are definitely interesting times.

How Will the Startups Created in 2020 be Different?

How will the startups created in 2020 be different?
“The class of 2020 startups will be unique in two ways: 1) the massive shift in market readiness, and 2) nearly every founding team will be distributed.”

“Teams that want to build world-changing products together will need better ways to communicate. It will be more difficult — and more important than ever — that co-founders find ways to quickly connect and align. And when people are sheltering-in-place, the geographic density of talent in Silicon Valley is much less relevant.” “

They will empower the solopreneur: With the uncertainty of the go-forward economy, many individuals are taking matters into their own hands and becoming their own businesses.”

“They will rediscover the Future of Joy: With money saved on gyms, travel, events and eating out, consumers will start to look for new ways to experience joy.”

“There are opportunities for creating new categories of spend. One example we are seeing is Learn Monthly, where we believe consumers are mastering creative pursuits like oil painting.”
