The Banality of Genius: Notes on Peter Jackson’s Get Back Documentary

The Banality of Genius: Notes on Peter Jackson’s Get Back

Here is an interesting take on the popular Beatles documentary Get Back.

“Watching extraordinary people do ordinary things is also just oddly gripping. I loved witnessing the workaday mundanity of The Beatles’ creative life. Turning up for work – for the most part – every day, at an agreed time: Morning Paul. Morning George. Taking an hour for lunch, popping out for meetings. Sticking up your kid’s drawing by your workstation. Confessing to hangovers. Discussing TV from the night before. Fart jokes. Happy hour at the end of an afternoon. Coats on: Bye then. See you tomorrow. See you tomorrow.”

Julius Caesar Vs Salt Bae’s Disruptive Strategies

Julius Caesar Vs Salt Bae’s Disruptive Strategies

“Disruptors and creative geniuses are idealists. They want to change the world, disrupt their industries, and have an impact.

The trouble is most people don’t have the courage to be different. And that’s fine.

But if you truly want to make a difference you’re not going to do it in your comfort zone.

As a disrupter, you will fail. Many times. But you keep iterating until you get it right. And you will get it right. Eventually.

Whereas if you conform to mediocrity because you are too scared to fail, then you will have failed before you even tried. Others may not know this…but, deep down, you will know.”

Blend different ideas for creative breakthroughs

Blend different ideas for creative breakthroughs

“Blending disparate items, concepts, or methodologies to create something new is the basis for many creative strategies that solve problems, disrupt markets, and, well, change the world.”

How creatives like David Bowie, Quentin Tarantino, and Leonardo da Vinci combine disparate ideas for creative breakthroughs.

How the World’s Most Creative People Bring Their Ideas to Life

How the World's Most Creative People Bring Their Ideas to Life
This post is not directly startup related, but it is very inspirational. I recommend watching the three videos shared.

YouTube sensation Casey Neistat’s video for Nike was particularly good. It wasn’t very unique and it didn’t have high production value, but it was one of Nike’s best performing videos. Sometimes you just need to show up and do the work.

The fact that he traveled around the world, made the story engaging. If you want people to be interested in you, maybe you just need to do interesting things.

“The best artists, writers, and innovators have a creative process that requires rigorous iteration. They cut, edit, slash, rip apart, and start over many, many times before the final version of their work comes to life. It’s frustrating, and it’s beautiful.”

How to Increase Productivity for Creatives

How to increase productivity for creatives
Jack Conte of Patreon talks about the difference between Finishing and Publishing.

“Publishing is deciding to stop when you want to keep working.”

“Productivity is a difficult skill to master, but it is such an important part to the creative process. Some creators are prolific because they work to publish. They publish their art and share it with the world despite the fact that they may not think it’s finished. I wanted to share some advice on how to increase your productivity and create more art. Don’t restrict yourself by only publishing when you’re 100% happy with the final product as that day rarely comes.”

Overcoming Fears Through Creative Risk Taking

Overcoming Fears Through Creative Risk Taking
“Creativity is hard. It can also be scary. And taking creative risks is even scarier. But what if I told you that those very risks are the things that could help you break free from fear and live a happier, more creative life?”
